Bamberg Castles

New Residence
(Neue Residenz)

Located at the Domplatz, there is the New Residence (Neue Residenz) that used to be the home of the prince-bishops during the 18th century until Bamberg lost its independency and became part of Bavaria in 1802. It is possible to view about 40 stilll furnitured rooms of the prince-bishops including the Imperial Hall (Kaisersaal) with a marvellous ceiling fresco by Melchior Seidl.

Alte Hofhaltung

Also a former residence of the prince-bishops and located at the Domplatz as well is the palace "Alte Hofhaltung" of Renaissance style. In the 11th century, there used to be a fortress where the "Alte Hofhaltung" is now. Passing the Beautiful Gate (Schöne Pforte), you enter a courtyard where the Calderon Festival is carried out in summer. In the Council Chamber (Ratsstube) of the "Alte Hofhaltung", there also is the Historical Museum of Bamberg.

Geyerswoerth Palace

Geyerswörth Palace
(Schloss Geyerswörth)

The Geyerswörth Palace is located at the Regnitz River where the home of the patrician Geyer family used to be. As Prince-Bishop Ernst von Mengersdorf loved the location at the river so much, he caused the construction of a palace in the 16th century. When you climb the tower of the castle, you will have a great view of Bamberg.

Concordia Palace
(Schloss Concordia)

As the rich councillor Ignaz Böttinger had such a large family and their former home, the Böttingerhaus, became too small, he put Johann Dietzenhofer in charge of building the Concordia Palace near it. Now, regular exhibitions are carried out in this grand palace.
