Bamberg Squares, Monuments & Churches

As Bamberg in Bavaria - also know as Franconian Rome - was hardly destroyed in the Second World War and therefore has the most intact center in Germany, all of the three parts of the historic city center became UNESCO world heritage in 1993.

Cathedral (Bamberg's Dom)

Bamberg's main cathedral, the Dom on the Cathedral Hill, was built by Heinrich II in 1004. As it burnt down in the 13th century and restored afterwards, it is now a mixture of Gothic and Romanesque style. In the 19th century, Ludwig I caused a redesign again and all post-medieval ornaments were removed. The cathedral has quite a number of extraordinary works of art. They are for example the "Smiling Angels" (Lächelnde Engel), the tomb of Pope Clemens II and the famous "Bamberger Reiter".

Old City Hall (Altes Rathaus)

Little Venice (Klein Venedig)

Located at two waterways and therefore often referred to as "Franconian Rome", Bamberg also has a "Little Venice". In this area between Markusbrücke and Untere Brücke at the east bank of the Regnitz, the little half-timbered houses have been built on poles in the water. In summer, the Sandkerwa festival takes place here.

St. Stephan

The Church of St. Stephan at the Stephansplatz is Bamberg's main Protestant church. Consecrated by Pope Benedikt VIII in 1020, it was redesigned in the 17th century in baroque style by Giovanni Bonalino and Antonio Petrini.

Böttingerhaus

In the south of Bamberg's historic city center at the Regnitz River, there is the beautiful Böttingerhaus of baroque style that used to be the home of Ignaz Böttinger. This wealthy councillor also put Johann Dietzenhofer in charge of building the Concordia Palace later.

Michaelsberg

When you leave the Domplatz and walk along the Aufsesstrasse, you will arrive at the former Benedictine monastery St. Michael on the southern hill - but before you have to climb up to the top of the Michaelsberg. This, however, is really worth the effort because you will have a brilliant view of Bamberg. In addition, the monastery has quite a beautiful church of baroque style with a beautiful ceiling fresco as well as a garden with thousands of plants. Also on the Michaelsberg it a medieval castle, the Altenburg.
