Bamberg's main cathedral, the Dom on the Cathedral Hill, was built by Heinrich II in 1004. As it burnt down in the 13th century and restored afterwards, it is now a mixture of Gothic and Romanesque style. In the 19th century, Ludwig I caused a redesign again and all post-medieval ornaments were removed. The cathedral has quite a number of extraordinary works of art. They are for example the "Smiling Angels" (Lächelnde Engel), the tomb of Pope Clemens II and the famous "Bamberger Reiter". |
